This guide takes you from a downloaded ISO to a first login.

Before you start

  • A computer with an x86-64-v3 processor, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot disabled, and at least 4 GiB RAM.
  • A USB drive of at least 8 GB. Everything on it will be erased.
  • A downloaded ISO that you have verified.

1. Write the ISO to a USB drive

No ISO has been released yet, so there is nothing to write. This step will be filled in when the first ISO is published.

2. Boot from the USB drive

Restart the computer and open the firmware boot menu (often F12, F10, F2 or Esc, depending on the maker). Choose the USB drive. Mongrix OS supports UEFI boot only.

3. Install

The dedicated installer boots directly into a console interface. It does not start a live OS session. Select an eligible destination disk, review its model, serial, capacity and existing partitions, then choose a hostname and root password. Type the exact ERASE /dev/<selected-disk> confirmation to begin.

Installation erases the entire selected disk and creates an EFI partition and an ext4 root filesystem. The minimum capacity is 16 GiB, increased when the OS payload needs more space. Custom partitioning and dual-boot are not available.

After installation completes, remove the installation media and reboot. These steps describe the development installer; no public installer ISO is released yet.

4. First boot

Log in as root with the password you set. Networking and other first-boot steps will be described here once they are tested.
